Supporting Our Kilimanjaro Heroes: High Season Updates and How You Can Help

Hello Friends and Supporters!

As the busy season on Mount Kilimanjaro continues, we want to share some updates from the Mount Kilimanjaro Porter's Society (MKPS). Your help and support mean a lot to us. Here’s a quick update on how things are going.

BUSY SEASON UPDATES

The high season is upon us, and it is a very crucial time for porters. This period provides them with an assurance of cash flow to maintain their families and cover all life expenses. During this time, the steady income they earn is vital for supporting their households and paying for education, healthcare, and other essential needs. The busy season not only brings financial stability but also offers the opportunity for porters to work consistently, which is critical for their livelihoods.

Since the porters underwent extensive training during the low season, this is the best period for them to exercise that training and put everything into action. The skills and knowledge gained during the training sessions are now being utilized to ensure the highest standards of service and safety for climbers. This includes not only physical conditioning and technical skills but also customer service and teamwork.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

MKPS ensures that all porters are well taken care of medically before every climb. Each porter has health insurance financed by MKPS, ensuring they receive the medical attention they need to stay healthy and fit for their demanding jobs. Regular health checks are conducted to prevent any potential issues and to ensure that porters are in optimal condition for the climbs.

In addition to health care, porters are also well-trained in financial management skills. The ability to manage and save money is a crucial skill that porters utilize during this high season. This training helps them to budget their earnings, save for the future, and live a smooth life during the upcoming low season. By promoting financial literacy, MKPS empowers porters to make informed decisions about their money, leading to greater financial security and independence.

THERE’S ROOM FOR GEAR DONATIONS!

We are seeking gear donations to support our hardworking porters. Proper equipment is essential for their safety and comfort, especially during the high season. Specific items needed include:

·      Warm Clothing: Porters face cold temperatures, particularly at night. Donations of warm jackets, thermal wear, gloves, and hats are essential to keep them healthy and prevent cold-related illnesses.

·      Sturdy Boots: The rough terrain of Kilimanjaro requires quality boots to support and protect porters' feet, helping them avoid injuries and perform effectively.

·      Backpacks: Porters carry heavy loads, and durable, ergonomic backpacks help distribute weight evenly, reducing strain and preventing injuries.

·      Rain Gear: Unpredictable weather means porters need reliable rain gear to stay dry and healthy.

·      Other Essentials: Sleeping bags, socks, and first-aid kits are also in high demand and greatly appreciated.

If you or anyone you know can donate these items, please send us an email to mountkiliporters@gmail.com. Your donations directly impact the well-being of the porters, enabling them to work safely and comfortably. Every piece of gear helps ensure porters can focus on their tasks without worrying about their basic needs.

Thank you for your support and for caring about the porters of Mount Kilimanjaro!
